What type of oil does a Mercedes-Benz use: conventional, synthetic, or a synthetic blend? It depends on several factors. Synthetic oil costs more because it is better at preventing buildup in the oil and on the engine parts, which reduces friction and controls the engine temperature. You’ll pay more for synthetic oil, but that investment pays off later because you can go longer between Mercedes-Benz oil replacement services—up to 15,000 miles.

Viscosity is only part of choosing the correct Mercedes-Benz engine oil. Two oils may both be labeled 0W-20, for example, while only one carries the Mercedes-Benz approval required for a particular engine. Mercedes-Benz publishes approved operating-fluid specifications such as MB-Approval 229.71, so choosing oil by viscosity alone may not provide the complete answer.
