The AMG® we know today is the culmination of over 50 years of engineering brilliance. What does AMG® stand for? A for Aufrecht, M for Melcher, and G for Großaspach. What, or who, do these names represent? Get a brief look into AMG® history to find out:
Early 1960s
In the 1960s, two engineers in the Development Department for Daimler-Benz were busy at work on a racing engine known as the 300 SE. Unfortunately, the company discontinued all motorsports activities before the engine was complete. But the two engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, weren’t about to throw in the towel just like that.
Acting on their shared affinity for all things motorsports, Aufrecht and Melcher continued work on the 300 SE engine at Aufrecht’s home in Großaspach – a municipality in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. In 1965, a colleague from Daimler named Manfred Schiek participated in the German Touring Car Championship using Aufrecht and Melcher’s 300 SE engine and won. Not just once, but 10 times over! Backed by Schiek’s triumph with the engine, Aufrecht and Melcher had now effectively established themselves as experts in optimizing Mercedes-Benz performance.
Late 1960s
However, Aufrecht couldn’t be satisfied with reputation alone. In his mind, he had one clear vision: to introduce racetrack performance to road vehicles. This led to Aufrecht’s departure from Mercedes-Benz in late 1966, and he persuaded Melcher to follow suit. Together in 1967, they founded the Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach engineering firm, which carried out the design and testing for the development of racing engines. Not long after, the engines the duo was building became the go-to for private racing teams.
Early 1970s
In 1971, an unsuspecting luxury sedan fitted with an AMG® Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 engine developed by Aufrecht and Melcher entered the 24 Hours of Spa – an annual endurance race. With the help of their engine, this “heavy sedan” overtook the lighter race cars it was competing against and took home the titles of champion in its class and second place overall! This event sensationalized the sedan, and AMG® quickly become a household name worldwide.
AMG® Today
