Navigating the world of electric vehicle (EV) incentives can be challenging. One such incentive is the Federal EV Tax Credit, also known as the Clean Car Credit. This article will answer the questions, “How does the Clean Car Credit work?” and “How does the new Federal EV Tax Credit work?” Don’t miss all the information you need about EV tax credits. Make sure to contact us, and our experts at Mercedes-Benz of Foothill Ranch near Orange County will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
How does the clean car credit work? Under the Internal Revenue Code Section 30D, you may qualify for a credit of up to $7,500 if you purchase a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 altered this credit’s rules for vehicles purchased from 2023 to 2032.
To qualify, the vehicle must be for personal use, not for resale, and primarily used within the U.S. Furthermore, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) cannot exceed specific thresholds, depending on your filing status. This credit is nonrefundable, meaning it cannot exceed the amount you owe in taxes, and any excess credit cannot be applied to future tax years.
The credit amount depends on when you took delivery of the vehicle. For vehicles placed in service from January 1 to April 17, 2023, the base amount is $2,500, with additional amounts added based on the battery capacity. The total credit can be up to $7,500.
Vehicles placed in service on or after April 18, 2023, must meet the same criteria and new critical mineral and battery component requirements. The total credit can be $3,750 or $7,500, depending on whether these requirements are met.
To qualify, a vehicle must have a battery capacity of at least 7 kilowatt-hours, have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds, and undergo final assembly in North America. From April 18, 2023, it must meet critical mineral and battery components requirements. The vehicle’s manufacturer-suggested retail price (MSRP) must also not exceed certain limits.
To claim the Clean Car Credit for your Trabuco Canyon upgrade, you must file Form 8936, Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit, with your tax return. You will need to provide your vehicle’s VIN.
