Most Frequently Asked Electric Car Service Questions

Is your Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle experiencing issues on Trabuco Canyon roads? Intrigued by a Mercedes-Benz EV but not sure what type of maintenance is involved? Then you’ll want to take a peek at some of our most frequently asked EV repair questions and see if we can’t resolve any of your problems remotely:

1. Do Electric Cars Need Oil?

No, EVs don’t require oil changes. Electric vehicles don’t need oil changes because they don’t have traditional gasoline-powered combustion engines. The purpose of oil is to lubricate the moving components of an engine. If there’s no engine to speak of, there are no moving components for the motor oil to lubricate. However, hybrid vehicles run on an electric battery and a combustion engine, so you’ll need regular oil changes for hybrid models.

2. Do Electric Cars Have Horsepower?

Yes, electric cars do have the horsepower. However, many automobile manufacturers will refer to the measurement of power in their EVs as “KW.” There’s not much of a difference between the two.

3. Do Electric Cars Have a Transmission?

Electric cars do have a transmission, but they don’t have multiple speeds. Internal combustion engines need several gears with varying gear ratios to output power. Electric motors produce the same amount of torque regardless of RPM within a specific range. Generating torque via revving isn’t necessary with electric motors because EVs produce power instantaneously. The gear ratios are carefully integrated and precalculated, so you don’t have to worry about changing gears.

4. Do Electric Cars Have Heaters/Air Conditioning?

They sure do! Electric cars rely on electricity stored in the batteries to run the heating and cooling systems. You’ll want to keep in mind that the design and efficiency of those systems are critical to the overall driving range of the EV.

5. Do Electric Cars Last Longer than Gas Cars?

Gas-powered vehicles have their advantages. Their parts are easier to replace over time, and gas-powered vehicles can travel further around Foothill Ranch on a single fill-up. EVs, on the other hand, can last longer with fewer maintenance appointments. That’s not to say that electric cars don’t require regular repairs. Nevertheless, the lack of moving parts improves its longevity.
