2017 Mercedes E-Class – Foothill Ranch, CA
The 2017 Mercedes E-Class in Foothill Ranch, CA features a fresh look and upgrades that make it seem like a whole new vehicle. The 2017 E-Class sports a fresh design, and now has the same modern look as the C-Class and S-Class. One of those upgrades is the performance, and it handles with slightly more confidence than its predecessor. While it might only have one available engine option, it provides this vehicle with enough kick to give it respectable acceleration for a midsize sedan. On top of that, it experiences Mercedes’ latest and greatest cutting-edge safety technology, such as Pre-Safe Sound — which will help protect your hearing if a collision is imminent via a certain frequency emitted through the car’s speakers.
In other words, it’s not only the most advanced E-Class yet. With never-before-seen technologies, it’s also one of the more innovative sedans for the entire 2017 model year.
A Fresh Design
The 2017 Mercedes E-Class is a four-door, five-seat midsize luxury sedan. While the shape is similar to the 2016 model, it’s all-new from an engineering standpoint. First and foremost, it’s lost some weight. Combine that with the improved aerodynamics, and it’s able to get better fuel economy than the current model. It also comes with a new optional air suspension, which provides for a more sophisticated and comfortable ride.
Visually, it’s a striking vehicle. Sharp character lines intersect with flowing curves to provide an elegant and aggressive appearance. The star logo sits prominently displayed in the center of a unique grille, with two big and bold chrome lines running over the black backdrop. This grille is positioned between two headlights, which have what appear to be a line of LED lighting separating the blinker and high-beams from the main bulb. This gives the headlights an even more menacing look, and is a design that’s seldom found on other midsize sedans. The hood is wide and arches slightly back into the windshield, which leads to an aerodynamic and (relatively) simple roof.
When viewed from the side, it’s important to note how the front-end of the vehicle looks. It’s a snub-nose design, completely flat from the top of the grille to the bottom of the front bumper. This makes the already iconic design even more memorable, which didn’t seem possible for a Mercedes vehicle until now.
On the performance side of things, it’s a rather unique experience as well. While the actual EPA estimates aren’t available at this point in time, the efficiency isn’t just measured at the gas pump. It’s also about how quickly a vehicle can get you to your destination, how it’s able to merge on the highway, or even how smooth the driving experience it provides. This is why the new Air Body Control is such an efficient system. It can turn pressurized air into poised handling, which provides a polished ride. This system is self-leveling and adaptive, with modes for some fast-paced fun on winding roads, or leisurely Sunday afternoon adventures with the family.
Dynamic Select pairs well with the different modes the suspension provides, seeing as it dials in the car’s performance character with the simple tap of a button. Modes like Sport sharpen the throttle, shifting, and chassis, while Eco mode let’s them relax. There is even a custom mode the user can input, which makes matching it up with the suspension’s specification of choice that much easier.
Now, on to the engine. The engine in the 2017 E-Class is turbocharged, and state-of-the-art. It gets more power from less fuel, and uses every drop of that fuel to ensure more dynamic performance both in the engine and on the road. It’s able to self-tune every few milliseconds, so it’s always able to take as little fuel as possible and maximize the potential. The result? A 2.0-liter inline turbo engine that puts out 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, which can catapult this mid-size sedan from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds (6.3 seconds on the 4MATIC® model). It’s able to perform like this thanks to the turbocharging technology, which spools up quickly to boost the response of the torque when the the driver hits the gas pedal. It can deliver all of the engine’s torque at just 1,300 rpm — quite impressive.
This engine is paired to a new 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, which has a greater range of ratios and shorter steps between gears. It’s able to change gears more quickly and seamlessly. It’s also lighter and more versatile, which enhances quiet-riding comfort and fuel-efficiency. The electronic selector and shift paddles let you control all the gear changes with your hands on the steering wheel.
Those paddles don’t just provide a more intuitive way to alter your driving experience, but also help contribute to the overall safety of the 2017 Mercedes E-Class.
The cutting-edge and high-tech safety systems being offered on the new E-Class make it perhaps one of the most innovative sedans in the 2017 model year. Mercedes has thought of everything when it comes to your safety in the E-Class, even your hearing. When the PreSafe Sound system senses an impending collision, it emits a safe “pink noise” — or a “short interference signal” — via the sound system. This noise pre-triggers your ears’ natural defense against loud noises of an accident; the noise causing a muscle in the inner ear to contract to preserve hearing.
The E-Class also comes with an Evasive Steering Assist system, which helps the driver when making a more controlled avoidance maneuver. For comparative purposes, it’s like a beefed-up electronic stability control system. PreSafe Impulse Side is another innovative safety feature. If an imminent collision from the side is detected, the system will rapidly increase the front-seat side bolsters via air chambers to move the occupant further away from the door towards the center of the car. This helps put the driver or passenger further out of harm’s way.
The lane-change assist system that you might already be familiar with on other vehicles is put to shame thanks to the Active Lane-Change Assist found on the E-Class. With this system activated, all you need to do is simply signal for the lane change. The car will then detect and determine when it’s safe to change lanes, and automatically do it for you.
