2016 Mercedes S-Class – Foothill Ranch, CA
The 2016 Mercedes S-Class in Foothill Ranch, CA is sitting second in luxury behind the 2016 Mercedes Maybach (which is new this year), but certainly not in performance. Before it was dethroned in the luxury department, the S-Class was considered to be the pinnacle in Mercedes engineering, which means a well-built and good looking design, exceptional performance, and advanced technology. With four different engine options, the performance is versatile – ranging from a fuel-efficient, relaxed drive, to a pulse-pounding thrill ride. The advanced technology is found both inside the cabin and underneath the vehicle. This technology is there to both entertain and make your ride safer and easier.
Quality design, luxury, performance, and technology should be a given with the S-Class model, thanks to the legendary reputation of the brand.
Dual Display Touchscreens
The S-Class is available in either a sedan or coupe body style. The coupe only has two doors (obviously) but still a surprisingly spacious backseat; whereas, the sedan body style gives the S-Class more rear legroom. However, the coupe style doesn’t have any B-pillars, which means it’s possible to put the front and back windows down for a more open-air driving experience that’s unique to a coupe model.
But two-door or four, the design of the 2016 Mercedes S-Class is both luxurious and sporty. It has a grille that looks more like a Bentley, with a single vertical line running up the center and four horizontal lines running across it. The famous trident isn’t sitting in the center of the grille. Rather, it’s an old-school Mercedes hood ornament positioned on top of the grille that designates the brand. This is most definitely a testament to how long it’s been around. It also has a wide and flat hood, with two depressions on either side to help match the low-positioning of the headlights. Sharp character lines run down the sides, while an elegant arch starts at the base of the windshield and follows up and over the hood to the trunk.
The subtle appeal of the design can’t truly be appreciated until you look at it for a while. As far as the more obvious looks go, it provides a sense of luxury and sophistication that can only be perfected by Mercedes.
The 2016 Mercedes S-Class has a great amount of versatility when it comes to performance, and it’s all thanks to the four different gas-powered engines: a 4.7-liter V8, handcrafted 6.0-liter V12, 5.5-liter V8, and a handcrafted 6.0-liter V12. These engines are trim level dependent, and the power of each will probably shock you.
4.7-liter V8 Biturbo
Starting us off is the 4.7-liter V8 Biturbo. This engine is found on the S 550 base trim and S 550 4MATIC® (the all-wheel-drive variant). The 4.7-liter V8 produces 523 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. This lets the S 550 and 4MATIC® to hit 0-60 mph in a mere 4.8 seconds. That 0-60 mph time isn’t bad at all for a base sedan. Actually, it’s rather impressive. The fuel economy varies slightly, depending on the body style, since the S 550 is available in both coupe and sedan body styles. That said, the standard fuel-efficiency on the S 550 sedan is 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Not too shabby for a sedan this size with that much power under the hood.
6.0-liter V12 Biturbo
Second in line is the 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo, which comes on the S 600 sedan. This engine starts to spice things up for the S-Class a bit, thanks to 523 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque, which lets the S 600 sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. While that’s not the fastest time the S-Class is able to hit, that’s still pretty fast. Fuel economy takes a slight hit, as EPA estimates now stand at 14 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
Handcrafted AMG® 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo
The handcrafted AMG® 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine produces 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, and careens the AMG® S 63 sedan from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. The engine on the next trim might put out more horsepower and torque, but this one is the fastest model found in the lineup. Fuel-efficiency is starting to noticeably suffer now, and the AMG® S 63 can get up to 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
Handcrafted AMG® 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo
The AMG® S 65 sedan is home to the handcrafted AMG® 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo engine. This is the most powerful engine in the lineup, and cranks out 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The reason the 0-60 mph time of this trim is 4.2 seconds — which is .3 seconds slower than the previous trim — is because it isn’t equipped with all-wheel-drive. This causes it to lose some traction, unable to get a grip as quickly when hitting the gas pedal. Fuel-efficiency isn’t as bad as expected for such a powerful engine, with EPA estimates rated at 14 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
The S 63 is one of the fastest (affordable) luxury sedans on the market, but nothing less should be expected from Mercedes. Even though the S 65 isn’t the fastest trim, it’s still the most power this model has ever seen, which means the 2016 Mercedes S-Class has two trims that are setting new records for the brand.
The latest iteration of Mercedes’ COMAND® infotainment system is back and, thanks to recent upgrades, it still remains one of the most user-friendly infotainment systems on the market. While some may argue that the immense amount of infotainment functions might be a bit overwhelming, it’s easy to see how having all those options would entice some tech-savvy drivers. Right next to the 12.3-inch high-resolution touchscreen sits another 12.3-inch screen, designed to monitor the vehicle information.
The new touchscreen itself has a massive central touchscreen, which has unique graphics. The touchpad controller is also more user-friendly, and there is a layout of frequently used buttons grouped around the main control nob as opposed to on the dash. Having these buttons grouped together like that makes accessing those functions much easier.
Nationwide SiriusXM Radio, global Internet radio, and multiple ways to bring your own soundtrack along for the drive make the inside of this vehicle more like a concert hall. Two sound systems by Burmeister — Germany’s revered name in high-end home audio — can be chosen. One of which is a lush surround sound, and the other a High-End 3D system that sets new standards for sound quality.
Not all of the technology is in the cabin. In fact, there are two innovative advancements that make the driving experience provided by the S-Class even more comfortable and relaxing.
Magic Body Control
Magic Body Control is found standard on all S-Class trims, and is one of the main reasons the S-Class is such a comfortable ride. It’s an industry-first system that can actually see bumps in the road ahead via a camera system, and subsequently take action to reduce the impact before you even notice them. Not only does this make the ride more comfortable, but it will drastically improve the lifespan of your vehicle as well.
4MATIC® system is the future of all-wheel drive. It’s as simple as that. But, Mercedes has always been known for pioneering futuristic technology in the here and now. This is much more than just an all-wheel-drive system. Instead of just providing power to all four wheels, it makes the best use of the power in each wheel. If this system detects any slippage on a wheel, it will draw the power from that wheel and send it over to the opposite one. That way, the opposite wheel that has grip will get double the power. This allows the vehicle to theoretically self-correct its slip, and avoid a slide. This program even works when two or three wheels are slipping. It will just take the power and transfer it to the wheel(s) that still have traction. When roads are dry, the 4MATIC® system is still beneficial. When the S-Class goes into a turn, 4MATIC® will transfer the power from the wheels that aren’t bearing any weight onto the wheels that are. This helps create a more sporty and stable driving experience.

In the end, it’s a groundbreaking all-wheel-drive system that’s able to harness never-before-seen technology in order to provide a more quality driving experience. Coincidently, using advanced ideas to provide a better ride also sums up the purpose of the 2016 Mercedes S-Class as a model.
